CHEYENNE, Wyo.- The Children's Museum of Cheyenne has been in the works for two and a half years. The concept is three stories with a universal design. The target age for the museum is 0-14 year-olds.
The cost of this project is close to 20 million dollars. Target opening date is late 2017/early 2018. Parking would be in a public parking garage half a block from the museum.
Ken Tobin, Architect of Record for the project says the design for this building is a building of this time, and the future. However, the building needed to be compatible with what is on the block.
The museum hopes to encourage learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and math ("STEAM"). Amy Surdam, CMC Board of Directors President, says the jobs that are "STEAM" based pay about 1.7% higher than non steam based fields. So by getting kids interested in those early, they'll more likely pursue those careers.
All of the exhibits would be hands on and interactive.
The first floor will contain the Fire Concept which according to concept documents will contain a central iconic exhibit in an authentic fire truck and fire-fighting equipment. With easy access for strollers, the Fire Concept gallery will also contain a small exhibit area reserved
for very young children. The Museum's gift shop (retail store) is also located on this level, with souvenirs and educational materials.
The second floor contains the Blue Sky Concept, the Crazy Train Concept, and the Me Concept.
The third floor would hold a flexible theater which could seat 300 to 400 people. It could also be used for other events such as weddings, receptions, recitals, speaking engagements and seminars. The third floor would also provide access to a rooftop garden.
The next steps for the museum are the design development phase, followed by construction documents and bidding. The process is expected to take 10 to 11 months. Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2017.
