NJCAA postpones national tournament

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) On March 12, the Lady T-birds found out they would have to wait five weeks to play in their national tournament, which was supposed to take place on March 17.

"Kind of suspecting that could be coming because of all the other events that were happening that there would be a possibility," said Head Coach of the Lady Thunderbirds Dwight Gunnare. "There was a reaction of is this a good thing and then after just having a few minutes you can put a plan together and you are excited about still having the opportunity."

In regards to COVID-19, the NJCAA has decided to not cancel but postpone the tournament until April 20. Gunnare says the Lady T-birds will now have ten days off before they return to the gym to start practicing again.

"And I want to applaud the NJCAA for reacting to this situation but in my opinion they reacted, but didn't over react. They postponed it instead of canceled and you know so I think it was great," said Gunnare.

Gunnare also said it is important to the kids, it's important to see if it is at all possible.

"I am just really pleased with how they came about with putting it off to the 20th for now," said Gunnare.

The NJCAA said in a tweet they will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.
