3A/4A State basketball in Casper cancelled

CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) The Casper Events Center is home to many different state events throughout the year. Volleyball, wrestling, 1A/2A state basketball, and most recently state spirit. On Wednesday the stands were filled with fans for the state spirit competition, but now it's a different story. What was supposed to be the 3A/4A state tournament, is now packed up and left empty.

"We were notified at 9 o'clock this morning by the Natrona County Health District, that due to the recent confirmation of a Coronavirus epidemic here in Wyoming that we were either to suspended, reduce the state 3A/4A basketball tournament," said General Manger of the Casper Events Center Brad Murphy. "As it turned out at 10 o'clock we were notified to cancel the tournament altogether."

A call that wasn't made by the WHSAA or the Casper Events Center but by the health department.

"I think the first point is that we have to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone attending the event at the Casper Events Center and so our safety and security of those patrons is the up most important so we are going to follow those directions by the health district for sure," said Murphy.

With thousands of people being drawn into Casper for the tournament, the goal was to prevent the spread before it started.

"We do not want to spread this virus across the state, we will have over 10,000 people that would have come to the event this weekend and if one person has that Coronavirus they can spread it to the entire state and regionally and nationally," said Murphy.

A decision on if the state tournament will be rescheduled has not be decided yet.
