Wyoming State Representative James Byrd running for Secretary of State
Wyoming State Representative James W. Byrd is running for Secretary of State.
Rep. Byrd plans to make the official announcement on Thursday form the historic Cheyenne Depot Plaza at 11:30am.
The democrat has been the representative for Wyoming’s House District 44 in Laramie county since 2009. His mother, Harriet Elizabeth Byrd, held the same seat from 1980 to 1988, and was the first African-American to serve in the Wyoming State Legislature.
Current Wyoming Secretary of State, Ed Murray, announced last month that he would not be seeking re-election, nor would he be tossing his name into the ring for Governor. This comes after a pair of allegations against Murray, claiming he sexually harassed women decades ago.
Should he win Byrd will be the first Democratic secretary of state since 1995, and only the sixth to hold the position.
