Three incidents cause outages across Cheyenne

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (WyomingNewsNow) - Cheyenne saw multiple power outages Wednesday afternoon, one lasting for at least five hours. Wyoming News Now contacted Black Hills Energy to find out what happened.

Officials say three separate incidents happened. The first involved a contractor digging or drilling into Black Hills equipment in the Buffalo Ridge area, causing extensive damage. Black Hills says that will lead to an investigation of the incident. It all happened around 3 in the afternoon and wasn’t repaired until 8 that night.

The other two were wildlife incidents. While officials could not confirm the animal involved in these incidents, squirrels are often the culprit. An animal came in contact with a pair of transformers – one in the Cole District, the other in the Buffalo Ridge area – causing the transformer to blow. Those outages happened around 6:45 PM and were eventually fixed as well.

Officials say that when a wildlife incident happens, Black Hills will repair the transformer and add equipment to the system to make sure animals can’t interfere with it again.
