Three men stranded in the backcountry of northwest Wyoming during a powerful snowstorm have been cited for snowmobiling in a wilderness area.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports the Denver men got stuck Monday on Togwotee (TOH-guh-tee) Pass northeast of Jackson and spent the night. A search and rescue team reached the men Tuesday afternoon, and they were taken to a nearby lodge.

No injuries were reported.

Teton County Sheriff Matt Carr says backcountry users should be cautious because search and rescue resources are limited, adding "we were fortunate that this was the only incident that required attention today."

The men could be fined up to $5,000 and face up to six months in jail.
