CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Press Release) -- Natrona County residents are encouraged to come to the Casper Senior Center on April 16 at 11 a.m. to receive free one-on-one tutoring on their cell phones and other mobile devices thanks to a partnership between AARP Wyoming and SkillsUSA.
The training on cell phones and tablets is free and there is no requirement to be an AARP member in order to take part in the event. In addition to the tech tutoring, a free lunch will be provided courtesy of AARP Wyoming.
“AARP has done four such events around the state and the combination of intergenerational connection and the student’s knowledge around technology is amazing to watch,” said AARP Wyoming State Director Sam Shumway. “The students are the subject matter experts in Senior High Tech and tend to really step up to provide an important service to those in their community.”
The tutoring will take place thanks to the work of students from around the state who take part in SkillsUSA, which is having its annual State Leadership and Skills Conference in Casper April 15-17. Over the course of the three day conference, SkillsUSA students compete in leadership and skills competitions. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel by providing educational programs, events and competitions that support career and technical education (CTE) in the nation’s classrooms. In Wyoming, SkillsUSA’s membership is 700 strong.
April 16 will be the fifth Senior High Tech project in Wyoming involving AARP Wyoming. At each event, a group of students from the local high school provides one-on-one tutoring sessions to those age 50 and over in the community. During past Senior High Tech events, high school students have helped citizens with questions such as finding old emails, sending photos to loved ones, or adding apps to a phone.
