CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -- The new Quebec 01 State Historic Site is open to the public. The site allows visitors to look at the control center for ten nuclear tipped missiles.

This is the only accessible Peacekeeper Missile Alert Facility in the world. It required two missileers to be in the launch facility. Seamus Smith, with the Quebec 01 State Historic Site, said that if they were found in the room alone it was an automatic court-martial. Missileers worked twenty-four hour shifts.

Smith said getting a look at the site is different than just reading about it online. He said, "It's really easy to say that somebody works their job for twenty-four hours and has to sit in a room, but until you go down there and start feeling how cold it is and how far underground, that's when you start to realize, 'Oh, maybe I can't do this job.'"

The facility is open Tuesday - Saturday each week from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. There were only 50 Peacekeeper Missiles put on alert from 1986 to 2005.
