LCCC to host Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo, Literary Connection and Sam Mihara
Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo: This is LCCC’s big annual rodeo – it’s named in honor of a student-athlete who died while competing at the Greeley Stampede in the 1990s. The event has been going on for years, and because our facilities are some of the best for a community college, we tend to get a lot of participants and interest from the region.
· Literary Connection: This is another event that’s been going on for close to 20 years. We bring in national authors for a chance to have a more intimate event with the community. This year, we’re doing it as a dinner event, which is the first time we’ve ever tried that! In the past it’s been a Saturday lunch event, but we’re anticipate even more interest with the set-up like this. Featuring guest authors: Carine McCandless (New York Times best-seller) and Annette McGivney (National Outdoor Book Award-winning author).
· Sam Mihara: A survivor of the Heart Mountain Internment Camp here in Wyoming. It’s a powerful story he shares, one that still resonates today. During World War II, the U.S. government forced nine year old Sam Mihara and his entire family to move from their home in San Francisco to an internment camp in Wyoming. Seventy years have passed since the incarceration, and Sam is one of the few survivors willing to speak about this experience.
