CASPER Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) It’s a common practice lately to carry around hand sanitizer. David North, Mills Fire Chief, said keeping large amounts in the car could cause a fire.
He added that hand sanitizer that can kill most germs averages at 70 percent ethanol. It can vaporize during a warm day and fires can start inside the vehicle from an exposed electric or ignition source.
He recommends keeping small quantities of it in the vehicle rather than a large quart.
“If everybody keeps it in a cool dry place out of the sunshine so you don’t get any radiant heat on it,” North said.
He added keeping it in the center console of the vehicle is a safe option.
