John Murdock tied for first at the 2019 Wyoming Cowboy Classic with a score of 203 (-13) through three rounds here at the Whirlwind Golf Club. Murdock dropped a three-hole playoff to UCLA’s Cole Madey to end the tournament. Additionally, Dan Starzinski finished in the top-20 with a score of 211 (-5) to tie for 14th. Wyoming ended the tournament with a team score of 854 (-10) to place fourth.
“I’m really, really proud of John,” said UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen. “He tied for first and lost in a three-hole playoff, but for stat purposes, it counts as a win. He played a great event. It’s really great experience for him. Sometimes losing is really good. It’ll keep him hungry and want to have a good month.”
Murdock is the fourth Cowboy to have multiple tournaments with a first-place finish, joining David Hearn (2), Dave McCleave (4) and Don Abbot (2). Additionally, his score of 13-under-par is the second-best score in school history, behind only his own 14-under-par in 2017 at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational he also won. He is the only Cowboy in history with multiple tournaments scoring 10-under or better.
The Cowboys shot the best round of the day among the 20 teams competing at the tournament, finishing the day at a 282 (-6), while UCLA was an 843 (-5). The fantastic round by the Cowboys catapulted them from eighth to fourth throughout the day. However, UCLA won the tournament with an overall score of 841 (-23). CSU Fullerton took second shooting 848 (-16), while Grand Canyon placed third with an 850 (-14).
“Having the low round of the day is awesome and shows a lot about the guys, our group and our team chemistry,” Jensen said. “They have to go out and play hard. They have to play for themselves, their teammates and their school. I’m proud of them. There’s a lot of moving parts when you host and it’s a big field.”
Carl Underwood shot a two-under 70 in the third round to place second among Cowboys on the day. It was his best round of the tournament, and he finished with an overall score of 227 (+11). Tyler Severin scored a 219 (+3) overall to finish the tournament tied for 51st, while Kirby Coe-Kirkham shot a 228 (+12) to finish 100th.
Playing individual for Wyoming, Jimmy Dales finished in a tie for 37th with a score of 217 (+1), while Jared Edeen scored a 223 (+7)
“We want to have a great month,” Jensen said. “We’re going to take it one tournament at a time, and I’m really pleased with their effort.”
The Cowboy Classic is held at the Whirlwind Golf Club here in Chandler, Ariz. It is a 7,218 yard, par-72 course.
The Pokes return to action on Friday, April 19, at the BYU Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah.
