"Forgotten" southern Cheyenne rec center is ready to be used

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) The Youth Activity and Community Center in south Cheyenne has been under utilized for years. Cheyenne Community Recreation and Events, is seeking grants and scholarships to help change that.

"What we're trying to do is build a program to where kids can stay together, same school same district. This way when they get up to the high school junior high level, they are familiar and they're ready to go," Recreation Specialist David Contreras said.

By securing grant funding, Contreras said the rec center will give parents and kids in the area the opportunity to enroll in sports activities on the south side of town.

Contreras said part of beautifying Cheyenne is addressing the needs of every area within the capital city.

The facility currently has a list of activities for all age groups. It can also serves as a multi purpose facility throughout the year.

"It's a great facility. We have an indoor basketball arena. We also use it for birthday parties, we're bringing in more sports, more adult stuff, more youth stuff, we're trying get this building going and get it out here for everyone," Contreras said.
