CHEYENNE, Wyo. (KGWN) - In May a strong EF-2 tornado tore through the town of Federal. Three months later and the Gifford family is still without a home.
"Back on May 27th a tornado destroyed our house and our barn and everything else on our property.,” Chad Gifford said. “Um, insurance has totaled the house."
Chad, his wife, his father and their two dogs have been living out of a hotel for the last three months.
Their home, barn and every other structure on their property was destroyed along with all the contents inside.
The insurance company gave them the money to rebuild and the Gifford’s found a contractor to do the work. After the demolition of what was left of the home, the county sent engineers to see if the basement could be reused. Unfortunately, engineers deemed the basement unfit, so chad has to rebuild his home from scratch.
His insurance company won't cover the cost of the basement despite Chad's expanded coverage limits and the fact that the basement is part of the home.
"All I want's my house back,” he said. “We're not asking for the Taj Mahal. We had a regular ranch house on six acres and that's, that's what we want."
