GLENROCK, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Technology is a vital part of operations at VR Ranch and other True Ranches in Wyoming. Going digital has helped speed up access to information by months.
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai speaks with True Ranches Superintendent Rob Gill at VR Ranch Tuesday.
"To be able to empower farmers and ranchers with the technology to make them more productive and more efficient is really important. Here at the VR Ranch, we got to see that," Ajit Pai, Federal Communications Commission Chairman, said.
VR Ranch's means of storing information has come a long way.
Rob Gill, True Ranches Superintendent, said many Wyoming ranches would benefit from using the technology they have.
Information they log includes: cattle birthdays, breeds, weights and calf births. Low frequency tags give ranchers the ability to ID each head of cattle.
"Here at the ranch, to see what they're able to do with wireless connectivity is really empowering. It makes me motivated to go back and make sure our precision agriculture task force is focusing on the technologies that other farms and ranches need in order to meet the standards of the 21st century farm and ranch," Pai said.
He grew up in a rural area and said he understands what it's like to be on the wrong side of the digital divide. He said everyone should have access to 21st century technology.
Pai will meet with Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon Wednesday to talk more about how to bring 5G technology to rural areas.
