The Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division is taking precautions to detect emerald ash borers and prevent damage to trees.

The EAB is an exotic beetle that attacks all types of ash trees. They tunnel into the tree and slowly kill it over a three year period.

There are roughly 600 ash trees on city property and crews are taking steps to avoid damage.

Trees in poor health can be attacked first, so those will be removed and replanted with a new species of tree. To further avoid damage traps have also been placed around the city.

There are 10 traps around Cheyenne. They are roughly 5 feet tall and shaped like a funnel. The traps are green and city foresters ask that the public not mess with them. They have some chemicals in them that could be dangerous.

If you see a trap on the ground, call the Cheyenne Urban Forestry Division at (307) 637-6428.
