2023 High School State Volleyball Day 2
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - There’s only one day of high school volleyball left to play, as the State Tournament Semi Finals concluded earlier today. There’s a couple of familiar faces in the finals, and two that will have a new state champion.
Starting in 4A, Kelly Walsh was looking to make their way back into the state title game, but standing across from them was Thunder Basin, who are looking for their first ever state title in volleyball. The Lady T-Bolts came out lightning fast as they got won the first set in commanding fashion. The second set was a lot closer, but the Lady Trojans found themselves down 2-0. Despite the odds, they fought back taking sets 3 and 4 to force a 5th set. They came close to the reverse sweep, but Thunder Basin managed to take it as their first state title hopes are still alive.
The other 4A match up saw Laramie and Cody battle it out for the final spot in the state championship game, and did this match up deliver. Cody battled their way to take set 1 25-22, and set 2 saw the same exact score but it would be the Lady Plainsmen who got 25 this time. Both teams continued to trade blow for blow, with the Fillies taking the third and Laramie taking the fourth. Both teams state title hopes laid in the fifth and final set. Cody got out to a 8-6 lead, but the Lady Plainsmen rallied back and punched their ticket to the state finals as they won out 15-12.
In 3A Douglas and Powell battled it out for the right to play the defending state champs. Powell swept Douglas earlier in the year, but this was a different Bearcats team tonight. They battled all the way to the bitter end of the first set with Douglas leading 1-0. The next set saw these teams go toe to toe again, but it would be Powell who picked up the win and they rode that momentum through the third set. The Lady Panthers found themselves up 2-1 and managed to close it out in the fourth 27-25.
The Broncs stampeded into the semi-finals going up 2 nothing after the first two sets. However the Hornets weren’t going to go down without a fight, showing just how mighty a hornet could be as they battled to a 29 to 27 third set win making it a 2 - 1 lead for the Broncs. The fourth set mirrored the last one as it went down to the wire, with the Hornets trying to keep their cinderella story alive but, the clock struck midnight on them as the Broncs won 25 - 22 advancing Burns to the finals.
The Panthers struck first winning the first set 25 to 21, but the Cyclones stormed back in the second set winning 25 - 20 tying the score up 1 - 1 heading into the third set where it was anyone’s game. Cokeville however, held their own this next set not allowing southeast to hit the 20 point mark. The Cokeville Panthers defeated the Southeast Cyclones 3 - 1.
