2023 High School State Volleyball Tournament Day 1
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The fall high school sports season flew by as we’re already in the final weekend of volleyball for the year. Teams from all over the state are competing for their shot at the state title, and we had some viewing area teams staking their claim to the prize.
4A saw a lot of familiar faces return to the semi final round. Kelly Walsh dropped the first set to Campbell County, but that was the wake up call the defending 4A State Champs needed as they took the next 3 to win it 3-1. Much like Kelly Walsh, Laramie was stunned in the first set against Star Valley, but the Lady Plainsmen came back in a big way as the closest game in the next 3 sets was decided by 9 points. Laramie took it over the Lady Braves 3-1. Cody and East battled back and forth early on, but the Fillies found the sweep as they return to the Semi-Finals. The only new face in the semi finals this year is Thunder Basin, who swept Riverton.
In the 3A conference, Wheatland had the chance to deny the defending state champs the repeat, but Mountain View kept their state title hopes alive as they swept Wheatland. Douglas took on the runner ups from last years state tournament, and they got on Lyman early 2-0. The Lady Eagles managed to fight off the sweep with set 3, but Douglas called game in the fourth and final set. Torrington took on Powell and gave them a run for their money early on, but the Lady Panthers kept their cool and managed to advance to the next round downing the Lady Trailblazers 3-1.
The defending 2A champions Burns Broncs come into tonight’s first round looking to defend what they rightfully claimed last year facing off against the Shoshoni Wranglers. The first two sets were back and forth as the game was tied 1 - 1 heading into the third set. The Broncs however were not going to be wrangled tonight, as they beat Shoshoni 3 - 1 advancing to the next round. The one seeded Western Conference Greybull Buffalos looked to mark their territory against the fourth seeded Eastern Conference Pine Bluff Hornets. This game went all the way to the bitter end, tied 2-2 heading into the fifth set with the Hornets swarming the Buffalos going up early with a 13 to 3 lead. The hornets wound up stinging the Buffalos pulling of the upset of the night winning the game 3 to 2.
The Southeast Cyclones faced off against the Burlington Bobcats in 1A action, and the first set was a tight one with the Cyclones just barely getting the first set with the score of 25 to 23. However after that, it was almost as if an actual cyclone hit the Ford Wyoming Center, as Southeast goes on to sweep the Bobcats 3 - 0 and punch their ticket into the 1A semi finals.
