WATCH: Thursday Night Volleyball! (October 19, 2023)
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The final Thursday of the high school volleyball season featured no shortage of action around the state.
In the capital city, East held their senior night against crosstown foe South. The home team came out firing; the first set was never really in question as they cruised to a 25-15 win. After that, the Lady Bison woke up. In the next frame they were the ones to seize control early, and found themselves with a 17-12 lead in the later stages. However, East dug deep and ripped off a 13-3 run to take a commanding 2-0 match lead. That momentum carried over to the third and ultimately final set, as the Lady T-Birds shut the door with a 25-17 victory. Janie Merritt was once again everywhere for East; she racked up team-highs with 12 kills, five aces and six digs. Bradie Schlabs also recorded six digs while leading the way with 13 assists, and Clara Kerschner’s four blocks paced the team in that department.
Across town, the undefeated Laramie Lady Plainsmen made the trip over to face off against Central. The Lady Indians blocked well on the night with eight as a team, and forced errors at the net as well with their activity. However, Laramie proved once again that they’re an an unsolvable puzzle, as they improved to 27-0 with a sweep (25-10, 25-16, 25-14). Maddy Stucky had 20 assists and four kills on the night while Tessa Todd contributed 13 kills. The Lady Plainsmen have a chance to cap off an immaculate regular season on Friday against East in both teams’ final game before regionals. Central-- along with South-- finished their regular season play with Thursday’s contests.
Natrona hosted #3 Thunder Basin in their last home stand of the season, and they made some noise in the first set. It went back and forth all the way until the bitter end when the Lady Bolts called game after a floater to take the early 1-0 lead over the Fillies. The next set started off in a very close match up, and it wouldn’t be until halfway when Thunder Basin managed to go up by 4 and maintained that lead all the way to the end of the second set. After this the Lady Bolts found their stride as they dominated in the third set, sweeping the Fillies in their last home game of the season.
Glenrock made a short trip down I25 to take on the Lady Bearcats in their last game of the season. Douglas made it back into the top 5 of 3A, earning the #4 spot and they came out in full force of this one. They managed to get out to a 7-1 lead in the blink of an eye, and although the Lady Herders desperately tried to fight back, Douglas took the first set by 16 points. It seemed like the only thing that Douglas could do was slam the gas as the second set was much of the same. In the end, it would be a 3-0 sweep for Douglas as they now wait for regionals to start next week.
