WATCH: Friday Night Frenzy (Week 6, 2023)
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Week 6 featured East and Central locking horns at Riske Field in this week’s Game of the Week.
The Indians entered Friday night on a two game win streak, while the T-Birds suffered their first loss of the season in Week 5 against Sheridan. East struck first on a Drew Jackson touchdown late in the first quarter, but Central punched back in a big way when Miles Porwoll went on an 84 yard catch-and-run to the house. The Indians took the lead with just under four minutes left in the first half thanks to a 37 yard field goal from Brock Pedersen, but after that things went downhill for the home team. East responded with a quick touchdown drive to take a 14-10 lead on a Cam Hayes keeper; on the following kickoff Central couldn’t field it clean, and the T-Birds recovered. Hayes punched in another score to make it 20-0, and afterwards-- with just seconds remaining-- Nathan Mirich picked off an Indians pass deep in their own territory. That set up a 31 yard try from Liam Fox to give East a 23-10 lead going into halftime. The T-Birds never looked back in the second half, picking up their eighth straight win in the series by a score of 45-16.
There were 3 teams in 4A sitting at 5-1 going into week 6, but one of them would have 2 losses on their record after this week. #4 Natrona hosted #3 Campbell County as they fought for sole possession of third place. The Camels were putting together a nice drive, until Tim Edmondson stripped the ball and gave the Mustangs possession. Rogan Potter would capitalize off the turnover after he ran it in for the first score. The Camels would answer back as Trenton Rosenau managed to find open field after a solid cut back, but Edmondson got his hand on the ball and blocked the point after. After a monster punt by Trig Berens, the Camels were pinned on their 5, and Beau Russell came through with the safety on the next play. Natrona didn’t stop there, they found the end zone one more time after a run by Daniel Yates. Despite one more score from Campbell County, the Mustangs defend their home and pick up their 6th win on the year.
The Douglas Bearcats were looking for their fourth win of the season as they hosted the Riverton Wolverines. The Wolverines scored the games first touchdown as Derrick Devries followed behind his offensive line, to find space in the endzone. The Bearcats marched down the field the very next drive, setting themselves up for their first 6 of the game, but Nick McIntosh said not today as he makes an interception in the endzone. The interceptions didn’t stop there, as the Wolverines came up with one the following drive, but their defense was able to hold the Bearcats to a 3 and out. Ultimately the Douglas Bearcats defeated the Riverton Wolverines 25-17.
