Prep Athlete of the Week: Keelan Anderson, South
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Keelan Anderson has been showcasing his leg all season for the South Bison, but no kick was as significant as the field goal he drilled in the fourth quarter of Friday’s game against Natrona County.
Anderson put a 61 yarder through the uprights, which set the Wyoming state record. He said he was targeting the accomplishment going into the season, and seeing it come to fruition was extremely special for him.
“One of my goals this year was to definitely try to break the state record, so when that went through and those hands went up I mean I was just jumping. I was-- you know I ran over and kind of hugged my special teams coach, and it was just a surreal moment celebrating with my team and all the friends I’ve made on that team this year,” Anderson said.
Anderson previously tied the record with a 57 yard field goal in the Bison’s game against Kelly Walsh, and then blew the doors off of it against the Mustangs. He was quite impactful outside of the record setting kick as well-- nailing 42 and 41 yard tries earlier in Friday’s game.
Anderson now holds the three longest field goals made in Wyoming this season; his 53 yarder against Thunder Basin checking in at third. He has made seven of eight tries so far on the season, and he said his impressive range stretches even further than what he showed in his record-breaker.
”I’ve gotten up in practice-- I’ve hit [from] 65 before. So anything more than that, maybe [with] some wind at my back. 65 is kind of it-- 66, 67, maybe-- but I’ve hit 65 before so I can confidently say 65,” Anderson said.
Congratulations to Keelan Anderson on owning the longest made field goal in Wyoming history.
