CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - For us here in Wyoming, the official fire season has come to an end, but that does not mean fire safety has to end.

The US Department of Agriculture Forest Service and National Association of State Foresters Experts have launched a new Smokey the Bear ad-campaign known as ‘Smokey is Within’. This campaign will be used to remind Americans that no matter what time of year it is, it is important to follow wildfire safety and prevent non-controlled wildfires from occurring and how to help prevent unwanted, human cased wildfires.

95% of Americans feel that they can make a difference in preventing fires”, according to the USDA Forest Service. This new ad campaign is to help those that do want to learn how to prevent these unwanted wildfires from burning.

Maureen Brooks, Branch Chief - Wildlife Prevention and Community Mitigation USDA Forest Service wants to remind Americans that we must take a “personal responsibility” when we enjoy several activities outdoors, whether it is working on your own property or recreational activities, like camping. When doing such activities, we must think about what may cause a spark while doing such activities.

This ad campaign in particular focuses on a lesser known cause of wildfires, such as pulling loose tow chains on a vehicle. This could cause a spark, which could easily ignite a wildfire. We are reminded by Brooks to “channel our inner Smokey” to protect our lands from these unwanted and human-caused wildfires.
