CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Week 1 of the high school football season saw every viewing area team in action for the first time this year.

In this week’s Game of the Week, Pine Bluffs handled Shoshoni 36-12 in a rematch of the 2022 1A 9-Man state championship game. The contest took place on Thursday, and the full game write up can be found here.

Headlining the 4A competition was a top-three showdown as first ranked East hosted third ranked Natrona County. The home team got off to a fast start courtesy of two David Hondel scores-- one receiving and another on a punt return. Natrona forced just one T-Birds punt in the first 24 minutes, and were unable to score themselves in that time. East entered the break up 45-0, putting the game out of reach to the point they were able to rest their starters through the entire second half. The Mustangs did get on the board after halftime, but the contest ended as a statement T-Birds victory by a score of 45-7.

Central made the trek to the Oil City where they took on Kelly Walsh, and both teams were still looking for their first win of the season. The Trojans were looking to play spoiler to the #5 Indians, and they started it off with a fumble recovery on the very first drive. However, Central would find a turnover of their own, as Nathan Brenchley got an interception, and they never looked back. There were a ton of Indians making their way to the end zone, including running touchdowns by Brenchley, Mason Counter, and Miles Porwoll before the end of the half. Central put an exclamation point on their first win as they took down Kelly Walsh 38-6.

The Douglas Bearcats kicked off their 2023-’24 season against the Jackson Broncs (0-1) Friday night. The Bearcats didn’t take long to get out to an early lead as senior quarterback Trey Rinn, helped lead the Bearcats to an early 14 – 0 lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter. By halftime the score was 21 – 0, with the Bearcats never looking back to start the second half after junior, Cash Tillard stripped the ball and it was recovered by Rinn who ran it back all the way for a 60-yard touchdown to put the Bearcats up 28-0. The final score of the game was 35-19, marking the Bearcats first win of the season, and bringing the Broncs to 0-2.
