Prep Athlete of the Week: Rogan Potter, Natrona County
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Week 0 of the high school football season wrapped up over the weekend, and Natrona opened their season with a convincing 29-0 win over Laramie.
No one on that field looked more impressive than Rogan Potter; after some receivers ahead of him on the depth chart graduated this past spring, he’s taken on the expanded and revamped role in stride.
”I think playing slot versus outside this year opens up a lot more ways to get me the ball... and along with having a quarterback who likes to throw too, and a good receiving core this year just helps our pass game a lot,” Potter said.
Potter was an imposing threat through the air on Friday; he finished the game with nine catches, 66 yards and two scores, but even more impressive is that he bounced back after admittedly feeling like he got off to a rocky start. Along with working as a wideout and defensive back, Potter handles kicking duties for Natrona as well. He missed his first two field goal tries of the game, but responded by making his next two-- including a career long 41 yarder.
Potter said that once the nerves of the first game settled down, he was as comfortable as ever out on the field.
”Our team as a whole started kind of slow, and I definitely had kind of a rough first half. But getting the touchdown helped me loosen up a lot, and the little adjustments to my field goals along with just shaking it off, and getting used to the game as it goes on. And then I think everything kind of just came together in the second half, and it was a lot cleaner. We showed that we were better in the second half,” Potter said.
Potter and the Mustangs will be back on the field Friday when they travel to face East.
