CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - High school football is officially back in the Cowboy State, with all of 4A and a variety of smaller schools beginning their season on Friday.

The Game of the Week featured two top five teams in 4A, as Sheridan made the trip to Riske Field to take on Central. The game was a rematch from the 2022 playoffs, when the Broncs picked up a 63-42 victory en route to their eventual state championship. The Indians struck first in the season opener on a Mason Counter rushing touchdown, but ultimately that would be their only scoring in the contest. Sheridan hung up 26 unanswered to down the home team; the Central defense forced a handful of turnovers, but their offense struggled to capitalize on the opportunities.

The second game in the Cheyenne area was South hosting Thunder Basin looking for their first win since October of 2019. South loses 56-10. There were some positives though! A beautiful deep ball from Osayas Garcia to Gabe Hernandez would go 80 yards to the house! A school record was also broken, Keelan Anderson hit a 53 yard field goal right before the Bison went in for the half.

Natrona was in action Friday as well. The Mustangs opened up their season against Laramie, and the last time these teams played Natrona got the better of them. Natrona opened up with the ball, and after a methodical drive they made it to the goal line. Laramie stood their ground and forced the Mustangs to miss their first field goal, but Natrona didn’t let it end there. After a forced fumble by Noah Sides, this time the Mustangs got the job done on a beautiful pass from Trig Berens to Rogan Potter. The orange and black didn’t allow a score the last two times they played the Plainsmen, and this time was no different, as they shut out Laramie 29 to 0.
