Laramie County Fair holds Demolition Derby
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Laramie County Fair was full of the sounds of engines and twisted metal, the Demolition Derby was in town!
The derby, presented by Rocky Mountain Derby Productions, started at 5 P.M. on Saturday and ran for four heats of cars with prizes up for grabs.
KGWN Sports was only able to get a hold of the results of heat one, they went as follows:
- 1st Place: Jace Ley - $2,000 and the Mad Dog Trophy
- 2nd Place: Evan Boyer - $1,300
- 3rd Place: Jordan Lutz - $700
This was personally my first time ever at a demolition derby and I cannot believe I went 24 years without experiencing one. It was a skeptical full of adrenaline and more skill than people give the event credit for. But, despite all of the fun in the arena and the skill of the drivers, one driving force of this whole thing is the people who clean it all up. I am talking about those who call themselves “wrecker ops” and they enjoy the derby just as much, if not more, than anyone else.
“It’s pretty warming,” Wrecker op, Maxx Prime, said. " I brought my family out here too. it was a great honor to be able to bring them with me. I like it a lot. I think we should have more people out here though, I really do. More cars and more people!”
Prime is right, it was a special first experience for me, I really hope more people get out and enjoy demolition derby in our area soon.
One of the wrecker ops that I met out on the fair grounds was a man named Doug. I found out that he had worked wrecker ops for 50 years now and county. He told me that he loves his job and has never felt like he was “working” a day in his life.
