CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - While the high school football season has been over for awhile, last weekend some of the best players in the state gathered for the annual North-South Shrine Bowl.

In that contest Garet Schlabs stood out above the rest; he went out with a bang in his final game representing East Football. Schlabs earned Offensive Player of the Game honors in the South’s 27-24 victory, and he was excited to be able to put on for the T-Birds one last time.

”Yeah it was awesome you know? Just going out there to represent your school, and luckily I was able to do it with Trevor [Eldridge] and Ethan Brinkman as well. So being able to play with those guys and Coach [Jesse] Blunn, and then we also had our two trainers Quincie [Moser] and TL [Espinoza]. So being able to just represent our school with those guys was pretty sweet one last time. Especially to come out with a W like that, it was pretty awesome,” Schlabs said.

He gave the North secondary problems all game, catching eight passes for 113 yards and a touchdown while adding a 32 yard rush on a fake punt as well.

The accolades for this week don’t stop with his Shrine Bowl performance either; this weekend Schlabs will head to Cody for the Milward Simpson Awards ceremony. He was named one of five boys finalists for an honor that recognizes the most outstanding prep student athletes in the state. Schlabs said that he’s extremely grateful to be considered amongst the best.

”Yeah, that means a lot. I kind of followed it last year and then kind of forgot about it to be honest until it started coming up again this spring. So yeah just being up for that is pretty unreal. One of the highest awards you can get in Wyoming as an athlete. So just to be able to be a finalist, and be talked about with some of those other guys is pretty unreal and still pretty sweet,” Schlabs said.

The award ceremony will take place on June 17.
