CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Target has been facing a backlash about their Pride Month display across the nation.

And now it’s touched Cheyenne as well. We talked to folks about the incident and how it impacted our community.

(From the recorded incident) “Nazis in Germany, too,” said Donald Crerar. Right... I don’t... I’m not a Nazi,” said a Target clerk.

On May 24th, an incident happened at the Cheyenne Target.

A local shopper expressed concern over the Pride Months display in the store.

“It’s always good to exercise your first amendment rights. Im very dogmatic, there are certain things that I wish everyone would exercise without fear of retaliation,” said Donald Crerar, a Concerned Shopper about LGBTQ merchandise- Videotaper.

Crerar confronted employees and managers about the items and recorded the incident on his phone, and put it on his Facebook page.

Here in Wyoming, a lot of people, I believe, don’t think that we’re going to see stuff like this in our community. A lot of people don’t know that this could be happening,” said Crerar.

In the video, he expresses concerns over LGBTQ products and their impact on children.

“At the end of the day, this is not about me. This is not about you , this is not about the adults, this is about protecting the children,” said Crerar.

This week Wyoming Equality and Families for Freedom are saying thank you to the employees for the display.

One of the things we believe in is free market capitalism. And I think most Wyomingites agree that capitalism means that companies get to sell to their markets,” said Jen Solis, Freedom for Families.

“A lot of the merchandise that they seem to be upset about is a lot of rainbows. Its multi colored, be you. It doesn’t really say anything harmful or indoctrinating,” said Marcie Kindred, Freedom of Families.

“We have LGBTQ folks here in Cheyenne. We have students we have teachers we have adults raising families, we have people serving in our military who are in this community and we want to celebrate them, and there is a market for this merchandise,” said Solis.

They decided to show their gratitude by giving them gifts and coffee cards for the local Starbucks.

“We’re fighting back against that cancel culture. We’re fighting back against that fragility that says everybody has to agree, and everybody has to think, and buy, and sell the same way, said Sara Burlingame Wyoming Equality.

Target has a history of celebrating diversity with other monthly awareness and inclusion displays and items.

(From the recorded incident) “Well the fact that pedophiles know the children are looking at that,” said Crerar. “I don;’t see anything over here that screams pedophilia to me,” said a Target clerk.

We reached out to Target for a comment on the incident and have not heard back in time for broadcast. We’ll keep you updated as this story progresses.
