Burns’ Cody Hape closes high school career with two individual championships
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Cody Hape has been a staple of Burns athletics for the past few years, holding prominent roles on the football, basketball, and track teams.
The latter sport is where he will continue to compete at the college level, and he finished his prep career with a bang. The senior brought home two individual championships at the state track meet, and with those performances Hape was able to reach a few personal goals he set going into the weekend.
“[The goal] was going in scoring 30 something points at states, which is what I ended up doing. But really I had a couple goals. In the 400 I wanted to break 49 seconds, the 200 I wanted to break 22 seconds, and the 100 I wanted to break 11. I didn’t get the 100 and 200, but I broke the 49 by quite a bit,” Hape said.
He ended up winning both the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes., and was just two hundredths of a second away from winning the 100 meter dash as well.
While his time as a Bronc is over, he won’t be going too far away as he’s set to join the University of Wyoming’s track team next year. Hape said he draws inspiration from a fellow Burns alum that made his mark on the Cowboys’ program.
”I want to be able to break and hold some records there at UW. I saw that one of the guys who went to Burns here, his name is Gregg Sawyer, he has one of the records up there too. Just seeing how everyone here, they’re reacting and they’re like ‘wow he still has a record there?’ Like I want that to be me too, and I want to be able to hold a couple at UW,” Hape said.
Congratulations to Cody Hape on earning the titles, and best of luck next year in Laramie.
