Prep Athlete of the Week: Sydney Morrell, Central
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The last few years Sydney Morrell has been one of the major forces in the state for distance running. Fittingly, she capped off her high school career with three more individual championships and a team title.
Morrell said that she and the other Lady Indians drew motivation from the indoor season.
”From the beginning of this season, that was our end goal. I mean we came off of indoor with a loss which was a little unfortunate, but I think that just got us a little bit fired up for the outdoor season. So it’s just a great ending to the season,” Morrell said.
Her individual performances helped power Central to a fifth straight outdoor track team championship; she won in the 800 meter and one mile runs, plus she repeated as the champ in the two mile.
The success in Casper last weekend brought her illustrious high school career to a close, and at the meet Morrell had a chance to appreciate how far she’s come over the years. They say numbers don’t lie, and the times Morrell ran had her impressed with herself after she completed that 3200 meter race.
”I actually didn’t realize the difference in shape that I was in this year compared to last year. I just realized that really at the state meet this year when I was like ‘I am literally splitting my mile [personal record] from last year in a two mile.’ So I think that was awesome just to kind of understand the growth that comes with every year in your high school career. I’m hoping for my trajectory to keep growing as I move on to college,” Morrell said.
Morrell will be competing at the Division I level next year at Iowa State.
