CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The top ranked team for the majority of the softball season will hold a number one seed for the state tournament that begins on May 18. East hosted a doubleheader with Laramie on Tuesday for the teams’ final regular season meeting, and they grabbed a sweep to clinch the East conference’s top seed.

The Lady Plainsmen jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first of the first leg, but that was the majority of their offense throughout the game. The Lady T-Birds responded in the latter half of that frame with five runs, and never gave Laramie another lead. A nine run fourth inning that began with a Trista Stehwien solo home run broke the game open, and powered East to a 16-5 victory.

The first game locked down the top seed for the Lady T-Birds, but they continued to roll in the following contest. It was close going into the fifth inning, but East scored three runs in the frame to get a cushion that held the rest of the way. Emily Schlagel and Aleah Brooks each went deep with two-run shots, and provided the majority of the team’s offensive production in their 7-3 win.
