Coach Jeff Linder has options while assembling his new roster
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Coach Jeff Linder has had a busy couple of months. The UW Men’s basketball roster saw 11 players leave the program after the season ended. Linder has now gotten the roster back up to 12 total players with two scholarships still remaining. While it’s possible that they try to use those spots, Coach Linder said it’s far from a guarantee.
“I’m not sure in this day and age, whether or not having 13 guys on scholarship, if that’s the right thing to do or not. We’ll continue to look for the right guys, and if those guys present themselves, then we’ll definitely look to fill those two spots, but that doesn’t mean that that’s something that we have to do,” said Linder during a press conference on Tuesday.
As of now, eight players have committed to u-w for the upcoming season. A healthy chunk of those players come from different levels of college ball, with 5/8 being transfers. Four players on the program’s website are listed as forwards. While Coach did mention a couple of play styles he might be looking for with those last two spots, he’s not tying himself down to any specifics when it comes to who will be on the court together at any time.
“I’m just gonna play whoever gives me the best chance to win. If that means four guards, that mean’s four guards. If that means two guards, two wings, and a post, so be it. If that means five guards. I think for us kind of right now where the roster’s at, yea I mean if we can find maybe a guy with some size, but also not sacrifice in skill, I think that would be a good thing. Then, just another guard that might have the ability to handle the ball and make some plays,” said Linder.
The deadline for the NLI signing date regular period is May 17.
