CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The first one’s always the sweetest.
The UW Cowgirls clinched the tennis program’s first Mountain West title in school history last weekend after beating Air Force on Friday, 4-2, and rolling through New Mexico on Saturday, 4-0, in Fort Collins.
There hasn’t been a wealth of athletic achievements to cheer on in Laramie this year but Cowgirls’ tennis has changed that headline and they’re hunting for more. Next stop: Las Vegas.
UW is the #1 overall seed in the Mountain West Tennis Championships set to take place this week in Las Vegas. The Cowgirls have a first round bye and will take on the winner of the 8-9 matchup, either San Jose State or New Mexico, Thursday at 11 a.m.
They closed out the regular season with a record of 14-9 overall and 9-1 in the Mountain West.
The Cowgirls are ranked 75th nationally capturing victories against then-no. 42 Colorado State and no. 67 Fresno State. This was their first appearance in the top 75 since 2015.
