Prep Athlete of the Week: Hayden Swaen, Post 6
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Sixers got off to a scorching hot start to their season at 4-0, and catcher Hayden Swaen was a big part of the success.
Aside from manning the plate in a weekend where the team gave up just four runs combined, his bat was seemingly a magnet for the baseball. He said that his coaches have been a big help with elevating his prowess at the plate.
“I would definitely say my plate discipline, pitch selection, controlling my zone up there [was working for me]. Coach Lain and Coach Barker, they’ve been working with me a lot trying to keep my zone to where I can get the pitch that I want. Or even if it’s not the pitch that I want but it’s where I want it, I can really get into one,” Swaen said.
The work certainly paid off for him as he had a monster weekend hitting, and showed a good eye as well. In total, he reached base in seven of his twelve plate appearances, and when he made contact it was most likely for extra bases.
Swaen went 5 for 10 hitting, three of those were doubles and he connected on a long ball as well; he drove in seven runs while scoring seven himself on the weekend. To bump up the OBP he also drew a walk and got hit by a pitch.
With such a strong start to the season, Swaen said that this team has lofty goals they want to accomplish.
”We’ll be back at states in Jackson, and that will be really good competition. Competition wise we can hang with anyone. We got a bunch of guys, we all know what we want. We’re gonna work and we’re gonna fight to get what we want,” Swaen said.
Congratulations to Hayden Swaen on his performance during the team’s opening games.
