CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The 2023 Wyoming Cowboys football season is officially underway, as the team started spring practice on Tuesday with the pads on.

After finishing third in the Mountain Division last year, head coach Craig Bohl said that the team has to work on the little things in order to get themselves to the top.

”I challenged all the guys saying we won seven games, good. To take that next step, that two percent [improvement] is hard to find. So we’ve got to peel back the onion and look at everything that we’re doing. Good is not good enough, and it’s going to take a collective effort by all of us,” Bohl said.

There has been a decent amount of turnover on both sides of the ball between graduating seniors and the transfer portal, but at the same time there are several returning starters from last year. Bohl urged them to not get complacent during this early portion of the season, because at the end of the day no role or playing time is guaranteed.

”You know, [the coaches are] going to teach you, we’re going to train you, then we’re going to trust you, and then we’re going to evaluate you. All of our players need to have a chip on their shoulders, certainly some of our older guys need to keep that chip on their shoulder... Nothing brings out the best in a man other than competition. I know the best pep talk that I’ve ever had as a coach when I was a position coach, or a coordinator, or a head coach is ‘the next guy’s in’,” Bohl said.

The team will be practicing every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for the next five weeks.
