Prep Athlete of the Week: Daljit Kaur, Burns
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Burns Lady Broncs basketball team sent shockwaves throughout the state when they won the 2A championship as one of the bottom two seeds in the tournament.
Forward Daljit Kaur was dominant throughout their run, but despite her scoring outburst that phase of the game was far from her primary focus.
”I’m not going to lie, my main goal this weekend was actually on the defensive end. Because I knew that I couldn’t risk giving up minutes by having to be in foul trouble and sitting on the bench. That’s just not what my team needed. We needed to be out there, all of us playing our best basketball. The only way I could be out there is by playing good defense, and that was kind of the goal. I knew that everything else would kind of just fall in place,” Kaur said.
This makes the fact that she led her team in scoring and rebounds for every state tournament game even more impressive. She poured in 20 with seven rebounds in their victory over number one Rocky Mountain on Thursday, followed that performance up with a 19 point, 11 rebound double-double on Friday to lift Burns over third ranked Sundance, and in the big game she scored 15, hauled in 16 rebounds, and of course, became a state champion.
Kaur said that the journey from a rough start to the year made this title even more special.
”It’s a lot of emotions. It really like brings me to tears every time. It’s so awesome to think that this is where we came this season, because it’s truly been a roller coaster of a season. There’s been a lot of ups and downs. We really had to work through some things as a team, and we did that. Which is so awesome to just think that all that hard work we really did put into it [paid off]... Now that I’m going back and thinking about it, everything just played out the way it was supposed to, and it was just meant to be,” Kaur said.
A euphoric week became even better on Monday, as Kaur was named to the 2A All-State team as well. Congratulations to her and the entire Lady Broncs team on an inspiring championship run.
