Legislation helps military families and keeps communities safe

The military dependents school choice bill passed the Senate.

This gives military families whose children are facing discrimination the ability to change schools without the school district’s approval.

School authorities have said school capacity remains the biggest obstacle to transferring these students.

Several military families have left the state because of repeated discrimination and harassment.

The committee also passed the Purple Star School bill, which helps military families by allowing students to have education consistency when they move out of state.

Next, the Sex Offender Registration Requirement bill would require the most serious sex offenders to stay on a registry permanently.

Currently, major offenders must remain on the registry for ten years and offenders of minors or incent 25 years.

“This crime exists in the dark. This crime exists when there is silence, and this is the governments opportunity to shed a light on that and basically be a part of protecting our community,” said Rep. Christopher Knapp, H.D. 53.
