CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The last time that the Kelly Walsh girls’ basketball team made the state tournament was 4 years ago during the 2018-19 season. Since then the Kelly Walsh team hasn’t found much success, and they believed a change needed to be made.

Making her head coaching debut this season is Kelly Walsh class of 2009 graduate Kayla Gilliam. After leading the Lady Trojans in scoring her senior year, she went to Colorado Christian University to continue her basketball career.

With this new role at head coach, Gilliam wants to use these early season games are important for her team to find some chemistry. Heading into these games, Gilliam wants her players to find some chemistry. She said for the upcoming games, “I just want the girls to be confident and aggressive and work together. This so far has really been about finding our mold together and unity together and so that’s mostly what we’re focused on is going into it tomorrow as a team.”

Last season, Kelly Walsh had an in-conference record of 3-7 with an overall record of 11-13. The Lady Trojans defense was a weak point in their game last season, allowing an average of 52 points per game. They are also bringing back seven seniors this season from last years team.

Their approach to the game will be relying on quick guard play as they are one of the smaller sized teams in the conference. Senior Rylie Alberts talked about their style saying, “We’re a lot smaller than most teams, but we’re super quick, so we’re going to try to utilize our post, but we’re still… We don’t have the height advantage really.”

The Lady Trojans have had a rough start, going 0-3 in their opening tournament with losses to East, Central, and Natrona. They will be back in action at the Flaming Gorge Classic in Green River & Rock Springs.
