Pokes basketball team is relaxed and ready for the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Wyoming Basketball is starting some early season tournament play Friday in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. While they are there for a business trip, Head Coach Jeff Linder said that it’s still very important for them to be able to enjoy all aspects of the experience.
“Right now after we practice we have lunch, we’ll get out and let the guys go snorkel or do whatever they want in the water, and then we’ll be ready to go tomorrow. When there’s an opportunity to do some of these things, you need a break. It can’t just be basketball, basketball, basketball. So I think the ability to do some of those things will be good for us,” Linder said.
The Pokes are coming off a tough loss on Sunday to Southeastern Louisiana, so this week in St. Thomas has provided an opportunity to recalibrate a bit.
UW is the only team in the field to have made the NCAA Tournament last season, so they will have a target on their back entering the weekend. Linder noted that after their previous game, the players need to create better opportunities for themselves on the floor.
“We’ve got to fight for better shots. We’re taking average and good shots. That’s why you go whatever we went against Southeastern Louisiana, where you’re not really trying to fight for that next advantage that might create that next paint touch that now creates a higher percentage shot. So I think that’s the biggest focus from an offensive standpoint,” Linder said.
Their first foe will be the Howard Bison with a 1:15 p.m. tip on Friday.
