What to consider before using a gun for self-defense
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - With national stories of women being abducted and killed, such as the jogger in Tennessee, many, here in Wyoming, are looking at ways to defend themselves.
There are many different tools that can be used for self-defense, and some women are turning to handguns.
Wyoming is a gun-friendly state, but there may be more to consider when it comes to using one for self-defense.
“There’s a time that we can defend ourselves with lethal force and there’s a time that we can’t know the difference keeps us out of jail and in our warm beds at night,” said Wyoming Gun Company Training Instructor James Gallup.
In Wyoming, anyone 21 and older who can legally own a firearm can carry it without a permit. Owning a gun doesn’t mean someone will have the skills or practice to use it for self-defense.
For the skills to use a firearm in an active situation, experts encourage people to take training courses and practice consistently.
“If you really want to learn how to defend yourself in general, you’ll have to expand on those skills you learn in the basic courses. It’s going to be the same wherever you go, if you take a class from me, or take a class from somebody else, we have to be able to build on those skills to defend ourselves,” said Gallup.
Wyoming Gun Company offers basic pistol courses as well as more advanced classes. They also offer ladies-specific classes. For more information on classes, click here.
