CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - East’s win against Natrona County featured blazing speed from their skill positions and a strong showing on defense. Prep Athlete of the Week Garet Schlabs played a key role in both of those displays.

His impact on defense was felt both on the field and the scoreboard, when he turned on the jets for a pick six against the Mustangs. While that standout play came on the defensive side of the ball, Schlabs has been working on becoming more comfortable in the secondary.

“It’s definitely something I needed to work on. My sophomore year, I came in and played a ton of offense, didn’t play any D. So, last year was kind of my first time on defense but being a senior now and having a year under my belt, I’ve got a lot more comfortable,” said the Senior Thunderbird.

The offensive side of the ball, however, has been a strong suit of Garet’s for years now. While he’s made his presence known as a receiver for East, he says that playing with guys like Dom Kazsas and Drew Jackson just push him to be even better.

“It’s good seeing those guys in practice everyday. You know, that’s some of the best guys in state right there, so seeing them in practice is huge. We just challenge each other every day and just get after it and try to be 1-0 in practice every day and whatever it may be,” said Schlabs.

East’s next game will be on the road against Thunder Basin.
