UW’s Cole Godbout and Jordan Bertagnole love to compete like brothers
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The University of Wyoming football team will have new faces across the field, but the defensive line will return with plenty of experience headlined by junior nose tackle Cole Godbout and Natrona County grad and sophomore defensive tackle Jordan Bertagnole.
The two teammates are close friends on and off the field. They also closely resemble one another on the football field, which can sometimes even be a problem for those closest to them.
“We honestly do have pretty similar body types and like my mom sometimes will send me like a photo like, ‘Oh my gosh, Cole. Here you are,’” said Godbout during UW Football Media Days earlier this month. “And it’s [Bertagnole] just cause with helmets on we look pretty similar.”
During the 2021 season, the duo played in all 13 games together and combined for over 100 total tackles including over 10 tackles for loss.
The two also love to compete at everything. It doesn’t matter if it’s facial hair, video games or timed drills on the football field. The only thing that matters is who wins.
“I think this is my best summer because we have timed drills and strength things, and we’re always just trying to one-up each other, and I think that just really skyrocketed our results really,” said Godbout.
“We’ve definitely bonded over the years playing together so much on the field in practice [and] in games,” said Bertagnole. “Piggybacking off what he said, we never want to let one of our teammates down, and I feel like that’s how we feel with each other and the rest of the guys on the defense.
“With our relationship, we definitely bring another energy to the defense, to the team, that everybody [picks up on]. You’ll see it throughout practice [that] if we’re joking around, there’s going to be other guys joking around and having some fun.”
Bertagnole and Godbout will hope to build a wall on the defensive line in the season opener at Illinois on Saturday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m.
