Casper Community Greenhouse Project works to complete 3rd school greenhouse before fall semester starts
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - What began as a plan to build a local greenhouse turned into a city-wide food education project. The Casper Community Greenhouse Project is working on finishing the construction of its third school greenhouse at Park Elementary School before the fall semester starts.
The school garden program began in the fall of 2013 at Mills Elementary School. Since then two more greenhouses have begun operating at schools in Casper and Evansville.
“It’s really interesting because the focus of each school is a little bit different so the greenhouses are used a little bit differently,” said CCGP Executive Director LeAnn Miller.
Students at the schools have the opportunity to learn more about nutrition, agriculture, business, and healthy lifestyle choices through hands-on lessons.
The CCGP hopes to continue building schools around Casper and teaching students through a farm-to-school program.
“We love doing this and the school district has been a great partner for us in building these greenhouses and we want to continue and build more as well,” said Miller.
In addition to working with the Natrona County School District, the CCGP collaborates with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Wyoming Department of Education, and other local and national organizations.
