Kelly Walsh football hits the field for 2022 preseason
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Kelly Walsh football is in the midst of a decade-long streak of making the 4A state playoffs, and they’ve begun the preparation to increase that run to 11 years. The Trojans began practicing on Monday with the rest of its 4A competitors, and they’ve been practicing in the morning and early evening to try and avoid the recent heat wave.
Over 110 players and more than 15 seniors are looking to make names for themselves in the green and white on the gridiron this fall. Aaron Makelky, Kelly Walsh’s head football coach, said he’s looking forward to discovering some new guys this season after the graduation of players like Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Year Cameron Burkett.
“There’s gonna be new faces out there and guys that haven’t had a chance or maybe at a different position or fitting differently in the scheme making it big time where they are,” said Makelky after the morning practice on Thursday.
Makelky said this is his favorite time of the football season because “it’s all football.”
“I’m excited so far. The kids have done a great job of being leaders out here and being excited, and [for] our young group, it’s cool to see them go, ‘Oh this is how we do things.’ and follow the example of the older guys.”
The Trojans’ 2021 season ended at the hands of Rock Springs, and that’s who they will open the 2022 season against at home on Aug. 26. The Tigers are the 2021 4A runner-ups.
