Saxton Smith homers twice, Drillers win East District
DOUGLAS, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Casper Drillers met the Sheridan Jets with the top spot in the American Legion A District on the line Wednesday night. The Drillers came into the championship game after beating the Cheyenne Hawks 16-10 on Tuesday.
After two innings, Casper had been shut out on the scoreboard, but that all changed in the bottom of the third inning. Tannar Galey, the Drillers’ third base coach, might need an ice pack for his shoulder after the workout he received.
The Drillers scored 22 runs in the bottom of the third inning. Saxton Smith provided two of the biggest blows in the monster rally. The Natrona County 16-year-old smashed two three-run home runs in the frame.
The first landed just beyond the centerfield wall, and Sheridan’s centerfielder could only watch as the ball left the yard.
“I was thinking about driving the ball the opposite way with one of [Sheridan’s] better arms on the mound,” said Smith after the game. “That’s what happened.”
When his turn came around again in the inning, he launched one over the wall in right-center field.
“It’s super exciting because you don’t think that’s ever going to happen,” said Smith after the game about hitting two bombs in the same inning.
The Drillers clinched the top spot in the East District with a 22-3 win over the Jets. Holden Christensen also crushed home run in the barrage, and Kylan DePoorter had four hits and a pair of RBIs.
“All that matters is the state tournament now.”
Casper will head to Cody next week to play in the state tournament.
