CASPER, Wyo. (Release) - At approximately 5:00 am on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, the Casper Police Department received a call for service for a fire assist in the area of Wilkins Circle and N Poplar Street in Casper, Wyoming.

A responding Casper Police Officer arriving on the scene was struck by a wrong-way driver in a white box truck who was leaving the area. The driver fled the accident scene, driving south on N Poplar Street while weaving through lanes and oncoming traffic. The driver attempted to strike numerous other vehicles including other responding Casper Police Department and Casper Fire-EMS Department vehicles, as well as citizen bystanders and drivers.

Numerous citizens took evasive maneuvers to avoid collision with the truck. At least one citizen’s vehicle was struck in the area of 17th Street and S Poplar Street. It is unknown at this time if the citizen sustained any injuries.

Casper Police Department units pursued the driver of the box truck to S Poplar St. and Wyoming Blvd. SW. At that time, Natrona County Sheriff’s Office deputies became involved in the pursuit. The driver continued driving south on S Poplar St. and onto Garden Creek Road.

A CPD officer stopped his vehicle at Garden Creek Road and S Rotary Park Road to deploy spike strips in an attempt to end the pursuit safely. The driver struck the unoccupied CPD vehicle at a high rate of speed, ultimately causing the box truck to exit the roadway and crash.

After approximately 30 minutes, law enforcement officers were able to extract the driver of the box truck and the driver was transported to Wyoming Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Involved Casper Police Department officers sustained non-life threatening injuries. One officer was transported to the hospital and has since been released with non-life-threatening injuries.

This is a complex incident, involving multiple jurisdictions and agencies. Due to the direct involvement of the Casper Police Department officers, the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office is investigating this incident.
