10U Valor Vikings emphasize sportsmanship, win Friday night showdown
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Valor Vikings are a youth baseball program in Casper. One of the philosophies drilled into the players is sportsmanship. On the 10u squad, many of the players are onboard and believe the team’s sportsmanship is one of the best things about playing for the team.
“It means not to get down on yourself when you miss a catch like in left field, right field, or center field, or a grounder that’s in the infield,” said Xavier Whittle, who plays all over the field for the 10u team. “You just [have to] make the next play.”
“[Sportsmanship] is just not getting mad at yourself and your teammates or blaming things on your teammates,” said Kayhl Riddle, a pitcher, catcher, middle infielder and outfielder for the Valor. “It’s about trying to keep your head up wide even if you lose or if you win.”
Riddle and the rest of the 10u squad were in action at the Field of Dreams Field 4 on Friday night. They were taking on the Casper All-Stars, and Riddle was mowing hitters down on the mound early.
He walked a few hitters, but he was blowing pitches by them when the ball was in the strike zone. He finished the bottom of the first inning with two strikeouts and picked a runner off of third base. He’d finish his outing on the mound with three K’s in 1 1-3 innings.
The Valor got contributions up and down the lineup on Friday night. Trysten Dooley and Konner Oster provided plenty of power from the 1-2 spots in the lineup. Dooley had multiple hits to set the table, and Oster didn’t waste any opportunities for RBIs.
Whittle had a nice line drive that went to the wall for a triple, and he’d later score. Jack Bernardis had an RBI single, too.
The power pitching and hitting led to a 12-9 victory for the Vikings. They’ll play two on Saturday at the Field of Dreams Field 3 at 11:50 a.m. and 3:40 p.m.
