CHEYENNE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) -If you were hoping that Wyoming would somehow skip the new covid variants, you could guess again.

The new CoVid-19 variants, BA-4 and BA-5, are in Wyoming.

Across the country, these are starting to be the predominant strains.

This highly contagious variant is less severe than delta, although it still is causing hospitalization and deaths, with cases rising.

Wyoming’s total laboratory confirmed active cases as of Thursday are 584.

The CDC is recommending that folks over 50 get a second booster.

“Certainly, being vaccinated helps. Wearing a mask in certain situations especially depending on someones underlying conditions, so still, take it seriously, but certainly, we’ve got tools that we didn’t have at the beginning of the pandemic to help protect ourselves,” said Clay Van Houten, Infectious Disease Epidemiology Unit Manager, Wyoming Department of Health.

According to authorities, when the reformulation of the vaccine is being considered, they will eventually include the new variants.

No date on when those will be available to the public.
