LARAMIE, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - The Gem City Bison are Wyoming’s newest sports team. The Bison will compete in the Independence League, a summer collegiate wood bat baseball league, and the team will play its home games at Cowboy Field in Laramie.

For one of the co-owners, bringing this team to Laramie is extra special.

“Growing up in Laramie, graduating high school there, I had a great mentor with Coach Tom Hudson,” said Gem City Bison Co-Owner Lee Griebe. “So coming in and bringing this back to town is something that I can give back to my community that I grew up with and [will be a] positive light for families.”

The Bison will be one of ten teams in the brand new Independence League. Seven of the ten teams, including the Casper Horseheads, came over from the Expedition League. The squads will do battle from late May until late July.

Gem City’s roster lists college players from 16 different states and six total players from Wyoming.

Co-owner Austin Byler said that for this inaugural season to be a success, the team will make the best experience possible for players, treat their own people the right way, and also engage with the people of Laramie.

“We really wanna enhance the youth sports in town, the baseball and softball community, and really just give them outside resources that have a lot of experience and have had some success in their careers and some adversity that you can share with these kids and help them in all walks of life,” said Byler.

The Bison will hold baseball and softball youth camps throughout the summer and the team opens the season in Casper on May 24. Gem City’s home opener is on May 27 at 6:05 p.m.

Fans can purchase tickets on Gem City’s website or at the gate on game days.
