CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - High school track athletes are doing their best to peak at the right time before next weekend’s state meet in Casper. This weekend, Natrona County High School was the site for the 4A West Track Regionals.

Despite some very windy conditions, it didn’t hold up too much of the competition. Natrona County welcomed Riverton and other schools from the west side of the state for the chance to secure a spot at next weekend’s state meet at Kelly Walsh High School.

One athlete who wasn’t too bothered by Friday’s gusts was Jackson Dutcher, a Natrona County junior. The Mustang won the boys’ 800m and finished in fourth place in the 3200m. The 1:58.90 finish in the 800m was a personal record for Dutcher.

“I just knew that I wanted that PR, and I think it’s just the want,” said Dutcher on how he was able to succeed in the windy weather. “I’ve built up so much momentum the last few weeks that I’m peaking at the right time.”

Dutcher was awarded two medals for his finishes on Friday, and he earned an all-conference medal. That meant he was carrying a little extra weight around his neck for the car ride home, and he said “it’s a great feeling” when they drape that medal over your shoulders.

“You’ll remember [that feeling] probably for the rest of your life, and ya know, I wanna feel it again at state.”

A couple of Natrona County Fillies also had big days on Friday. Alesha Lane won the girls’ discus, and Delilah Baedke won the girls’ 3200m.

Day two, where many of the finals will take place, will resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
