Prep Athlete of the Week: Cameron Burkett
Kelly Walsh’s Cameron Burkett has been a highlight machine playing sports in the Oil City this school year, but he only needed a pen and paper to create a memory that will last a lifetime for him and his family on Monday.
CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - Kelly Walsh’s Cameron Burkett has created many highlights on the gridiron, on the ice and during track and field this school year. It was what he did with a pen and a piece of paper that turned heads this week.
Burkett signed a letter of intent to join the University of Wyoming track and field program on Monday afternoon, which earned the Trojan thrower Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week honors.
“Between my junior year and senior year, I was kind of leaning more towards football. Then, I started realizing I had more of a passion towards track, so I just chose track,” said Burkett about why he was signing to compete in shot put and discus in Laramie.
Last spring, Burkett won the 4A state shot put championship. He’s been making progress to repeat and enjoyed another victorious week throwing last week. He took the top spot in the shot put at the Gary Benson Border Wars in Sheridan and won the shot put and discus at the Kelly Walsh Invitational.
“It’s just been [really] enjoyable to have him,” said Kelly Walsh assistant track coach Chase Olsen, who works closely with Burkett on shot put and discus. “I think UW got a good one for him, and I think he’ll put in the time and work to be successful there, too.”
While competing in green and white, Burkett’s parents, Tom and Tina, have become permanent fixtures in the stands cheering for him. His grandparents have also been some of his most vocal supporters. The opportunity to head down to Laramie and stay close to home and family comes with one particular perk for Burkett.
“It’s close enough to where I can still drive home and Mom can do my laundry,” said Burkett, which was met with a chorus of laughter.
Congratulations to Burkett, Wyoming News Now Prep Athlete of the Week.
